Ancient kingdoms
Sri Lanka history stretches back over 2,500 years, with sophisticated kingdoms at Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa that built giant stupas, reservoirs and the rock fortress of Sigiriya.
Colonial era
Prized for cinnamon and spices, the island was ruled in turn by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, who left forts, churches and the great tea plantations of the hills.
Modern Sri Lanka
Independent since 1948, Sri Lanka today is a warm, biodiverse island of beaches, temples and tea country that has become one of Asia favourite destinations.
